The most wanted criminals are being hunted down by police today in a festive season Crime crackdown.

Police will be carrying out raids throughout the day, searching for criminals who have outstanding warrants against them.

The day of action is part of Operation Admiral — a Greater Manchester Police initiative designed to ensure people have a Christmas that is not blighted by crime. The raids are chiefly targeting those wanted for theft, burglary and robbery.

Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney said: “In the run up to Christmas, criminals often feel desperate and will stop at nothing to steal and rob.

“We are sending out a powerful message to criminals, saying we know who they are and we are coming to get them.”

He added: “We want this operation to boost public confidence at a time when they often feel most vulnerable, while at the same time, putting fear and uncertainty into the minds of these criminals.”

A rise in thefts and burglaries traditionally occurs in the run-up to Christmas as criminals look for easy targets.

As part of the operation, anyone arrested and taken to custody will be given a GMP Christmas card, inspired by a Marks and Spencer adverting slogan.

The card reads: “This is not just any Christmas dinner, this is a GMP custody suite Christmas dinner” and warns potential criminals that instead of turkey with all the trimmings, they will face a sloppy microwave meal served in a plastic tray.

Anyone with information about crime can call the police on 0161 872 5050 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
