A FRESH campaign has been launched to fight plans to replace a former pub in Unsworth with a mini-supermarket.

Developers Cobe Consulting have retabled proposals to demolish the Dragon pub in Parr Lane and build a retail unit with eight apartments above.

The company withdrew its original application to Bury Council in August after it received 110 letters of objection.

A new application which was resubmitted at the end of November has already received more than 30 objections.

The new application refers to council objections to the original plan because the retail unit was too big, had inadequate parking provision, would overlook neighbouring properties and would be overdevelopment of the land.

As a result, the new proposal is for a smaller retail unit, which is lower in height and served by 24 parking spaces — five more.

Mr Andrew Broadhurst, of Cobe Consulting, said: “We have met with planners on a number of occasions and have worked with them in relation to the objections they received.” But Mr David Lomas, from Lomas News, said the development is “not wanted”.

He said: “Although the plans have been modified, our objections are still the same: traffic, road safety, delivery access, noise, licensing, anti-social behaviour and the threat to local business — myself included.

“I am now trying to organise another meeting, asking people to sign our new petition and also asking people to object online or by letter to the Bury Council planning department.”

The council is now hoping that a decision on the matter will be reached by January 22.
