A RECENT correspondent (November 19) took exception to “The Rock” being appropriated as part of the development triangle title.

Given the enormous size of new buildings in the town centre, perhaps “The Block” might be a better choice.

I’m no Luddite in these matters, but private individuals are constrained against out of scale construction that might produce a hemmed in effect.

Travelling around Bury centre by car or bus is now a fairly disorientating experience. The massive construction opposite the town hall and built right up to the ring road adds to this effect.

My understanding is that the parish church (being built on a rock outcrop) is the original source of an iconic town name.

Past the (now flattened) Hornby Buildings it once merged into Fleet Street, leading on to the Moor (Toll) Gate.

I think that the veterinary business will be the only 19th century building left on that stretch now.

Looking north in the direction of the moors these days is more reminiscent of New York than Lancashire!

I am sure there is no connection, but the disappearance of the excellent museum model railway has removed an opportunity to view the town centre as it was when the views remained. This is by no means problem exclusive to Bury. In general, very large scale improvements always go too far on a commercial maximising basis. Unfortunately a different set of planning considerations seems to be available for these circumstance.

Would an independent mayor be able to exert more control (or taste)?

Will we ever know?
