Where would we be without traffic wardens? With lots of irresponsible parking that’s for sure.

All in all, more congestion, more fuel consumption and more CO2 emissions. With evidence of worsening climate change, isn’t that the last thing we need.

It is only right then that traffic wardens should be armed with head-cams to identify the irresponsible driver who turns angry, nasty and violent. Protect the traffic warden and ultimately, the world becomes a safer, happier place.

But what about everyone else who is threatened by the Mr and Mrs Nasty Driver? Isn’t it the case, that in some parts of Britain, even Mr and Mrs Lollipop have been armed with cameras to deter the Nasties?

As a driver, although the Nasties give me grief by tailgating and the like, they don’t tend to frighten me. However, when I get on my bicycle to save petrol and the planet, they put me in fear of my life.

Just as traffic wardens face abuse and worse from disgruntled drivers every day, so too do cyclists.

And it’s fair to say is it not, that no traffic warden has yet been killed in the line of duty? Not so the cyclist. We are being killed at the rate of around 150 a year.

So given that we have the technology, and we need to reduce congestion, obesity, and more importantly, our carbon emissions, wouldn’t it make good sense to arm cyclists with head-cams too.

Whatever it costs to make cycling safer and more enjoyable — the cost of a full tank of petrol for a gas-guzzler maybe — it has surely got to be worth every penny, and a price I’d be more than happy to pay.
