RADCLIFFE Probus Club held its Christmas lunch on December 2 at Stand Golf Club. The stunning view across the 18th green and beyond from the dining room provides a delightful setting for any occasion and certainly did for this one.
The assembled members and their guests enjoyed good company, good conversation and a fine menu. The principal guest was Jim Linean, president of Radcliffe Rotary Club and he and President Heathcote raised the toasts to the Queen and to the Probus Club.
Afterwards the guest speaker, Mr Ernest Statham, entertained with his own Pam Ayres style comic poems beginning with verses describing his tram journey from Victoria to Bury whilst seated next to a woman using a mobile 'phone. He captured her one-sided conversation with a funny, and most entertaining, poem. He followed with a further six or so poems and finished with a comic account of his own 90th birthday party.
President Heathcote thanked Mr Statham and invited him to “come to the Literary Society, great for a nonagenarian”
We all departed full of good cheer and ready for the festive season!
