VIOLENCE towards staff at Fairfield Hospital is under the spotlight as new guidelines are issued during a security awareness week.

The Managing violence and aggression, protecting lone workers against violence' guidelines have been updated and launched at hospitals within the Pennine Acute NHS Hospitals Trust, which runs the Rochdale Old Road site.

Mike Meehan, security and car parking manager, said: "Nearly all our patients and visitors treat staff with dignity and respect. However, the trust is committed to preventing violent and aggressive behaviour and will investigate all incidents and take appropiate action where necessary."

Peter Hinchliffe, trade union convenor, said: "We will support all measures up to and including criminal prosecution in order to protect our members. It is completely unacceptable that some staff face violence and abuse on an almost daily basis."

The launch of the revamped guidelines is part of a wider security awareness week, starting next Monday when the hospital will be highlighting a range of security issues, including protecting NHS staff, buildings and equipment as well as helping to stop theft and car crime.

Mr Meehan added: "Each day of the week has a different theme, from conflict resolution to car parking and environmental security. The local police will also be on hand to give out more specialist advice and information. While aimed mainly at staff, patients and visitors to the hospital are welcome to come along to the stand to find out more and pick up general security advice."
