A CARPET firm is laying down new roots in Bury after transferring from its previous location in neighbouring Rochdale.

Attracted by Bury’s recent retail renaissance, allied to reduced rates and rents, family-run United Carpets is happy in its new home in Rochdale Road.

Bury’s gain is Rochdale’s loss after Gary Wood, wife Susan and son David decided to relocate the business. Their new shop is close by The Rock and they hope the leisure and retail development will act as a catalyst to bring business their way.

Gary, aged 59, who manages the shop, said: “Previously, I’d worked for a firm of electrical engineers for 38 years and was production manager.

“When they decided to move five years ago, I was made redundant.”

He and son David, who had also lost his job, decided to enter into the retail sector and bought the United Carpets franchise before opening their own shop in Rochdale. But they were unhappy at the rates they were paying, claiming they were too high.

“But the council wouldn’t look into them,” said Gary. “Additionally, three years ago, there was free parking after 2pm and all day Saturday and Sunday which was good for us as we had car parks on both sides of our property. But they’ve become private with no free parking at any time.”

When he considered moving the business, Bury was his first choice. He, his family and many people in their village of Whitworth regularly shop in the town and were impressed by the range of stores and businesses available.

“The premises which we now have are more compact and we’ve got the same amount of choice. And our rates and rents are more manageable than they were in Rochdale,” added Gary. “There is parking at the rear of the shop and customers can get complimentary parking for an hour.

“We’re impressed with our new location which provides more footfall.”

United Carpets stocks and sells a range of carpets, wood floors and beds.
