EastEnders fans can expect fresh drama as a notorious character returns to the screen.

Serial killer Gray Atkins, played by Toby-Alexander Smith, returns to the long-running BBC soap in an episode airing on Monday night.

Atkins was last seen in 2022 when he was jailed for numerous crimes, including the murders of Chantelle Atkins, Kush Kazemi, and Tina Carter.

EastEnders villain returns to BBC soap

Mr Smith said, "It’s been very surreal returning to EastEnders and stepping back into Gray’s shoes.

"He’s one of the most complex characters I’ve had the opportunity to play and revisiting him after several years has been an exciting challenge to get my teeth into.

"Exploring who Gray is now has been fascinating, and I’m excited for the audience to see this version of him and watch the storyline play out."

Currently serving a life sentence, Gray's return sees him attempt to contact ex-wife Chelsea Fox through his grandmother Sheila, following news of son Jordan’s accident.

His true intentions remain undisclosed, but a spokesperson for EastEnders said Gray will “do his best to inflict chaos on those that used to be closest to him”.

Ben Wadey, executive producer of EastEnders, said: "We’re delighted to welcome Toby-Alexander Smith back to the role of Gray Atkins.

"Although his character remains in prison, it will soon become apparent to viewers that Gray’s physical separation from Walford is no match for his levels of manipulation."

EastEnders' TV schedule change for World Cup

EastEnders fans can expect another TV schedule change this week as the World Cup continues to be broadcast by the BBC.

The BBC soap is usually on from 7.30pm until 8pm Monday to Thursday, but this week looks slightly different.

EastEnders will not air on Tuesday, June 30, and will return on Wednesday, July 1 with a double episode at 7.30pm and 8pm on BBC Two.

The soap will air at it's normal time and channel on Thursday, July 2.
