AMIR Khan will be cheering on Bury Boxing Club's seven-man team, who are in action at Cookstown in Northern Ireland, on Saturday.

The teenage boxer made a surprise visit to the club, based at Seedfield Sports Centre, on Monday night, as the squad put the finishing touches to their preparations for the trip, when they will face boxers from all over Ireland.

Khan's younger brother Haroon will be in action for the first time since his disappointing visit to the Eurpean Championships when he was barred from representing his country because of age restrictions.

Khan, aged 15, will fight in the 46kilo division and hopes for an impressive show before he fights the week after for England against Ireland.

He is joined by seniors welterweight Jason Shaw and lightweight Tariq Khan and juniors Louis Allison, aged 14 58k, Stephen Ball, aged 14 48k, Rico Young, aged 14 30k and Yasir Iqbal, aged 12 42k.

Coach Mick Jelley said: "It is something the lads will always remember. It costs a lot of money so it is not something we can do regularly."

Meanwhile, in the past week, Bury ABC have had three out of five successful fighters on shows around the country.

On November, 6 Amraiz Iqbal beat D. Thornton (Kirkham) on points at Preston Guild Hall, while a few nights later Yasser Iqbal lost on a countback to P. Garnett (Ashton Albion) at Fox ABC.

On the same bill, Jason Shaw stopped A. Mushtaq (Roach) in the first round of their bout while Amraiz Iqbal beat D. Thornton again on a Penrith bill at the weekend.

Awaiz Iqbal, brother of Amraiz, lost on points to L. Conroy (Barrow) on the same show.
