SHAKERS legend Ryan Lowe says he would be happy to talk to the new regime at Bury about a possible return to Gigg Lane.

The Merseyside-based striker is currently under contract at MK Dons but says he would not be fazed by a step down to League Two.

“I’ve always said that I would be open to going back to Bury in the future and would never say never,” said the 34-year-old marksman.

“I don’t believe in the saying ‘you should never go back’. Who made up that rule anyway?

“And I’ve made no secret of the fact that I would like to move back up north to be closer to my family.

“I can’t say at this point, but if Bury come calling to me, or my agent or the football club, I would be more than happy to speak with them.”

Lowe moved to Bury in 2009 and spent three successful seasons at Gigg Lane, scoring 49 goals in 90 appearances.

He was eventually prised away by the lure of Championship football, helping Sheffield Wednesday to promotion from League One in 2012, but was later sold to MK Dons.

“Of course, I would like to play at the highest level for as long as I can, but if I end up moving down to League Two then it doesn’t matter,” he said.

“Saying that, I still feel driven. I was a late developer in football terms as I didn’t make it into the game until I was 20 or 21, and I have taken care of myself, so I want to carry on going for as long as I can.”

Whether or not that is at Bury remains to be seen, but, wherever he ends up, Lowe is just happy the future looks bright for his former club.

“Bury Football Club is very close to my heart,” he said.

“I never thought they would go out of business. I don’t think Brian (Fenton – the former chairman) would have let that happen.

“I think the fans should give Brian and his staff the credit they are due for keeping the club going.

"They have come out and done the right thing by making the club’s problems public and asking for help.

"I only hope now the club can go from strength to strength.”
