NORTH Manchester League Division one side ELPM won the Calverley Cup for the first time in their history, beating Rochdale Catholic Club by 33 runs at Woodbank’s Stafford Street ground.

After being put in to bat, ELPM made a slow start and were 27-1 after 10 overs with Kevin Dodson caught behind for 16.

Gavin Greaves was bowled for 13 with the score on 47 and at the half-way point ELPM were on 63.

Opener Gareth Young (30) batted steadily before hitting a rare six but was then caught with the score on 80.

Matty Partington (32) and captain Ian Wade (39) upped the run rate and a final blast of 22 from Simon Carr saw the score reach 180.

Paul Hewart struck in his first two overs to remove the Rochdale openers with five on the board, but they then began a recovery.

The introduction of Carr saw Mulkeen junior caught on the boundary by Dean Worthington for 36 with the score on 70-4.

RCC increased the tempo and were well on course for victory at 123-4 when Steve Dalton produced the pivotal run out of Willmore (32).

The last six RCC wickets then fell for just 24 runs. Matty Partington 2-24 had Mughal trapped lbw for 30 and then Carr worked his way through the lower order and ended the match catching the RCC captain lbw.

Carr’s excellent figures of 4-35 coupled with his breezy 22 earned him the man-of-the-match award.
