KARATE kid Elysia Alderton performed superbly to win a bronze medal at the WUKF World Championships in Slovakia.

The 10-year-old, who regularly trains with the AMA national England squad at the United Styles Karate Academy (USKA) Dojo on Hardman Street, Bury, won four fights at the championships in Bratislava to pick up a medal.

There were 2,600 competitors taking part in the event from 85 federations around the world and Elysia had four pools of fighters to get through.

She fought off Romanian, Slovakian and Italian girls in her age group before just getting pipped by one point by another Romanian, who went on to win the gold medal.

Proud instructor, Sensei Peter Allen (eighth Dan), said: "This is a fantastic achievement for Elysia as she’s still only a brown belt and 10 years old.

"She has proved herself to be a real karate kid, I couldn’t be more proud of her."
