THREE Bury athletes made the journey to Nottingham’s Wollaton Park to compete in the prestigious English National Cross Country Championships.

Conditions underfoot were dreadful with the course becoming a muddy swamp.

Freya Potts, running in the Under-15 girls’ race, made light of the difficult conditions to take a superb 79th place.

Her younger sister, Lola, took 230th place in the u13 girls’ race. In the u17 women’s competition Charlotte Speakman-Farnworth was 165th.

Bury also had three u17 members competing in the English Athletics Indoor Championships in Sheffield.

Rosella Togo competed over 60m and 60m hurdles, taking fifth place in her heat in the flat race in 8.22secs and was sixth over the hurdles in 9.69.

Rashaun Currie finished seventh in his 60m heat in 7.54 while Abigail Howard took sixth in her heat over 60m hurdles in 9.72.

On Sunday, a number of athletes competed in the Sale Harriers Open meeting at the SportCity indoor arena and several were rewarded with personal best performances.

In the u20s category, Daisy Worthington took fourth in the 60m (8.45) and 200m (28.09) sprints.

In the u17s, Grace Gibson set a season’s best of 28.31 in the 200m and a personal best of 1.48.20 in the 600m.

Anna Gisbourne had two excellent performances – winning the u15 200m and 600m in new personal bests of 28.67 and 1.49.65.

Multi eventers Jay Cook, Natan Witkowski and Jena Dickinson also had good afternoons.

Cook took third in the 60m hurdles in a pb of 9.40, just ahead of fourth-placed Witkowski (9.46).

He then turned the table in the long jump, taking ninth in a new best of 5.39, ahead of Cook (5.25) who was 10th.

Cook then won the shot with a best putt of 11.59 while Witkowski set a new best of 2.65 in the pole vault.

Dickinson was second in the 60m in a personal best of 8.28 and second in the shot with a season’s best of 9.50.

Luke Harreld was Bury’s sole competitor in the Blackpool Stanley Park 10k.

He ran well to take second place in an impressive time of 35.32, given the difficult conditions.
