TEN of Bury’s squad of young athletes competed at the Trafford medal meeting at Stretford on Bank Holiday Monday and several were rewarded with medals and personal-best performances.

Samuel Gooddy had an excellent afternoon winning golds in the under-15s shot (7.07m PB) and javelin (30.05) and a silver in the discus (20.21 PB).

Jemima Miles took second in her u15 shot competition with a PB of 8.04, while in the u13 javelin Isabella Robinson took seventh with 6.52.

In the long jump competition, Lucy Dent was first u13 with 3.36, Henry Cooper was second u11 with 3.01 and Blessing Idoko took sixth in the u15s with 4.28.

On the track there was a PB for Blessing in the u15s 100m which she won in 12.82, a time that currently ranks her fourth in the UK at the distance.

Evie Elliott also set a new best over the 100m, taking third in her heat in 13.86.

Over 75m, there was a second place for Ruby Dent (13.61) in the u11s race and Gabriella Idoko took fifth in the u13s (10.97). Gabriella and Ruby also competed over 150m where they took first and second in their respective heats (22.53 and 27.78). Isabella also competed over 150m, taking fourth in 23.33.

Blessing and Evie were back on the track for the 200m, Blessing winning in 26.85 with Evie taking third in a new best of 28.07.

Corrine Newton had a brilliant victory over 300m, setting a new best of 43.98 in the u15s competition, while Evie set a new best of 12.16 in the 75m hurdles and Jemima ran a speedy 12.55.

In the middle-distance events, Henry Cooper took fourth in the u11s 600m in a PB of 2:07.69. Corrine claimed another victory in the 800m in a new best of 2:25.91, with Isabella taking third in her race in a new best of 2:59.24.

Lucy Dent took sixth place in the 1200m in a new PB of 4:11.03, a time that places her 20th in the UK currently.

In what was generally a quiet weekend of competition for seniors, a number of Bury athletes participated at the parkrun events.

Conor Wilkinson was fastest of the day at Heaton Park, his winning time of 17:26 was only one second outside his best for the distance and illustrates the improvements he is making.

Sarah Thomas was second woman finisher (21:54) with Bec McAuley fourth, also missing her PB by a second (22:10).

Matt Garside took second at Bolton (19:49) and Jenny Yates was first woman at Peel in 21:13.

Lucy Dent was the only Bury entrant in the Macclesfield Harriers open meeting on Saturday where she won the 1200m in 4:16.

Ben Coop competed at the Wrexham half marathon on Sunday but was disappointed with his performance as he was almost 2.5 minutes slower than his time at Berlin, crossing the line in 22nd place in 1:11:58.

Matt Garside was also competing again on Sunday, this time at the West Lancs Sprint Triathlon at Edge Hill University campus, where he took 40th place overall in 1:04:43, having lost time on the cycling element he produced a strong run.

Further up the field in sixth and second in the u20 category was Sam Smyth who completed the event in 58:13 and had the fourth fastest run element of 16:59.
