ANDY Welsh has been rewarded with a new deal and the Bury AFC boss could not be more delighted.

Welsh, who led AFC to the NWCL First Division North title last season, has seen his side get off to a great start in the Premier Division - winning two and drawing one of their opening three games.

He also led Bury to a first ever FA Cup win after beating Hallam 1-0 in their extra preliminary round replay.

Ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup preliminary round clash at home to Widnes, Welsh said he is happy that he and his coaching staff can continue the adventure.

“I am delighted to be given the opportunity to continue the work we have been putting in over the past two years,” he said

“After the success of last season, it’s important as a club we continue to build. This shows that myself and the staff are committed to the club, as we continue to build on and off the field.”

As well as Welsh penning a new deal, assistant manager Phil Carrat, goalkeeping coach Spencer Harrison, strength and conditioning coach Alex Lenkowski and physio Aiden Bowe have also committed their futures to the club.

“We, as staff, continue to push the players and they have continually shown unbelievable dedication to this club to get themselves in the best shape both in training and in their own time.

“As I have said on numerous occasions already, the fans play a huge part of what this club is and what we want it to be.

“Your support and my connection with you is something we must continue to build, whether going through good times or bad. You are my army off the field, just as the players are on it.”

Bury maintainted their unbeaten start to the season last weekend thanks to a 2-1 home win against Congleton Town.

Ben Wharton gave AFC an early lead while Lewis Gilboy continued his fine goal-scoring form this season by making it 2-0 on the stroke of half time.

Thomas Pope pulled on back with 10 minutes remaining but AFC held on to make it seven points from a possible nine.

Club chairman Marcel de Matas said Bury start’s to the season confirms that Welsh is taking the club in the right direction.

“His drive and determination, alongside his staff, delivered the club a much deserved promotion last season and we feel confident in the direction that the club is taking with Andy at the helm,” he said.

“This is reinforced by the start we have had this season and we will continue to support Andy as much as we can to make us as competitive as possible in each game we play in.”
