BURY AFC boss Andy Welsh described Saturday’s 2-1 FA Cup victory over North Shields as a ‘momentous occasion’ for the club.

Connor Comber netted a late winner after Niall Cummins had given AFC the lead to set up a second round qualifying tie at Lancaster City later this month.

Attentions now turn to the league with Welsh’s side playing twice in three days - starting at Lower Breck this evening before Saturday home clash against Irlam.

Looking back on another historical cup win for Bury, Welsh said: “Absolutely delighted, the whole day was a spectacle…the North Shields fans played their part.

“It was a fantastic cup tie and I am so proud of this football club. Unbelievable!

Cummins gave AFC the lead on the stroke of half time which was cancelled out by a David Robinson goal on the hour mark.

But, cheered on by the majority of the 900 fans crammed at the Neuven Stadium, Coomber popped up with a winner in the 82nd minute to book a trip to NPL Premier League side Lancaster City who beat Stalybridge Celtic 1-0 after extra time in Tuesday’s night replay.

“The game is done and dusted now. Like we always say, one game does not define us as a football club or us as a team but it is just a momentous occasion to get to the next round of the FA Cup with it being live on the television against a team that is, again, higher opposition but I was just so pleased with the way the lads played their football.

“I’m just so proud of the players, the football club, the fans…it was just a great day for the club.”

Looking ahead to tonight’s clash at Lower Breck, Welsh added: “It is going to be a really tough game, no doubt about it. They have started off alright this season as well but we have got to get ready, two games in quick succession but we have to deal with the recovery side of it first.”
