Radcliffe followed up Saturday’s last-gasp draw at Matlock Town with an impressive 6-0 win against Daisy Hill in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy on Monday night, writes Kieran Wilson.

Boro produced a dominant display, scoring three goals in each half in a game in which the gap of three divisions between the sides was always evident.

Steven Carter, Matt Crothers and Richard Smith were all in target in the opening 45 minutes against the NWCL First Division North side and after Matthew Grivosti added a fourth on the hour, Luca Navarro rounded off a good night for the visitors with two late goals.

On Saturday, Boro celebrated and different kind of ‘win’, Connor O’Brien’s 94th-minute equaliser on his debut feeling as good as a victory.

Both outfits started positively but it was the home side gained the upper hand in the 13th minute when a swift counter attack ended with Eddie Church turning the ball home from close range.

That goal didn’t change the Boro’s momentum in the game however, as they continued to play vigorously with a number of attacking moves being kept out by the home side.

Radcliffe’s best chance of the half came just minutes before the break, Luke Joyce found space inside the box to square it across the face of goal to Matty Grivosti, the Bolton-loanee tapped towards the target but Luke Jackson got across to save an almost certain goal onto the crossbar and over.

Bobby Grant’s side wouldn’t have to wait too long to level the terms at the beginning of the second 45, Jude Oyibo put away his fifth of the campaign to restore parity three minutes after the restart.

Matlock goalkeeper, Luke Jackson made a number of impressive saves during the match, but by far his best effort came on the 59 minute mark.

Nicky Adams whipped a free kick in from the right and Bobby Grant got up to adjust his body to strike with an audacious overhead kick. It looked to be heading into the top left corner but the Sheffield Wednesday-loanee got across to palm the shot away for a corner.

The 32-year-old had another chance to put us ahead for the first time in the game minutes later, Matty Grivosti dinked a cross into the striker who couldn’t nod his attempt on target from a good position, which ended a forward move of 30-40 passes which led to the chance.

Against the run of play, Matlock restored their lead after 78 minutes, a long ball forward was brought down by Kallan Murphy into the feet of Alex Wiles who sprinted down the left side, squaring Brad Abbott to thump it into the top left corner from 12 yards out.

Radcliffe were on the back foot once again but the performance levels remained high as we looked to find an equaliser, which would eventually come deep into stoppage time.

Crosses from Nicky Adams down the right were a threat throughout the 90 minutes, but the addition of Matty Crothers as a second half substitute proved to be a vital one, as he provided the equalising assist in the fourth minute of added time.

His cross was swung into an inviting area and evaded the Matlock goalkeeper, dropping onto the head of Connor O’Brien at the back post who guided it into the back of the net. Converting a vital equaliser to leave Derbyshire with a point, and his first goal in a Radcliffe shirt on his debut.

Boro welcome Hyde United to the Neuven Stadium for a tough test against high-flying opposition.
