BURY humbled opponents who beat league-leaders Furness by 26-points in their previous fixture.

The visitors’ troubles started from the kick-off following their dubious decision to play with the strong wind at their backs in the first half.

Toc H opened their account in the 15th minute with a magnificent penalty from nearly 50metres, assisted by the wind.

Playing in the style which previously defeated Bury, Toc H were totally ineffective as they failed to break the Bury three- quarter line.

The platform for Bury was, however, the set scrum with the front five, particularly the two flank forwards Robert Plant, Rick Rothwell and the returning Nathan Ashman at number eight distinguishing themselves.

Bury levelled the score after 30 minutes when Rick Roberts Jnr, recalled at stand-off, knocked over an easy conversion from 20m, to cap an excellent performance In the second period, Bury showed Toc H how to play the conditions and bombarded them with a succession of kicks at the bottom left corner.

This resulted in several five-metre scrums but when the ball was moved out to the threes, nothing seemed to stick, which was possibly a consequence of the bitingly cold wind and good defensive work by the visitors.

Bury, however, broke down the opposition in the 55th minute and a move started on the Bury 10m line saw centre Harvey Leaming create a gap to feed left wing Mark Campbell.

He stepped off his left foot and grounded the ball 10m in from the corner for an unconverted try.

Toc H only mounted one threatening attack throoughout the whole game Bury almost added to their score with seven minutes remaining when scrum- half Mike Livesey chipped for wing Campbell to take his man and the ball into touch. Bury, unfortunately, could not score from the lineout.

Bury have now raised themselves in the league and should not be threatened by relegation.

This week, they welcome Littleborough to the Radcliffe Road ground for a re-arranged fixture, kick off 2.15pm
