HOCKEY: Bury GSOB moved five points clear at the top of the table as they maintained their good form against Formby with a 4-0 win, while rivals Leigh and Blackpool drew.

Formby set out to defend and hit Bury on the break with their pace, which made for a first half in which chances were at a premium.

Formby had two short corners, while Bury had some decent openings but failed to make the keeper work for most of the half.

Shortly before half time however, Bury were awarded a short corner of their own. The set piece was well executed and led to Matthews lashing home his second blistering strike in as many weeks.

Although in front at half time, Bury were not happy and were determined to up their performance after the interval. Better passing and movement led to an increase in chances and the Old Boys began to find their rhythm.

An excellent passing move saw Matthews find Berry in space on the left of the D. Berry took his time and fired low into the far corner.

Bury then continued to apply pressure, limiting the visitors’ attacking threat.

Two late goals sealed the points, Robinson tapping in at the far post from Fidler’s cross, then Fidler finishing Chris Lowe’s cross in the final minute.

Bury host Didsbury next week in the final fixture before the Christmas break.
