BURY ABC's Haroon Khan took a major step towards clinching a national Golden Belt title at the weekend when he eased his way into the finals of the Golden Gloves schoolboys championships at the Seaham Leisure Centre, County Durham.

The 14-year-old made short work of his Leeds-based opponent Dwayne Dyer (Star ABC), when the referee stopped the fight in the first round to save the Yorkshire lad further punishment.

All eyes now turn to the Class 3 46kg final a week on Saturday at Knottingley, Yorkshire.

His opponent will be the highly-rated Stevenage ABC youngster Terry Holmes who defeated Blandford's Gary Delange in his semi at the York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Holmes boasts an impressive record of 22 victories from his 24 bouts.

Meanwhile, Khan's older brother Amir will have to wait to take on his seventh professional opponent Diego Alejandro Madole.

The Olympic light-welterweight silver medallist was due to take on the tough South American at the ill-fated Scott Harrison show at the Braehead Arena, Glasgow on Saturday, March 25.

However, after WBO featherweight Harrison's title defence against Joan Guzman had to be cancelled because of an injury to the Scot, Commonwealth heavyweight champion Danny Williams was lined up to top the bill.

Now, Williams has had to pull out because of injury, forcing Sports Network chief Frank Warren to put the kibosh on the whole Braehead show.

Khan will now take on Madole in Belfast next month. Harrison will top the bill in his re-arranged fight against Guzman.

l Amir Khan has signed a multi-million pound sponsorship deal with the sportswear organisation Reebok.

The company, that has its roots in Bright Street, Bury, will use Khan for its high-profile "I Am What I Am" campaign.

As part of the agreement, Reebok will produce signature gloves, kit and boots for his fights.
