SHAKERS skipper David Flitcroft hopes to sign a new contract with the club by the end of the week to put an end to nearly two months of speculation over his future.

The club's player of the year is set to pen a new one-year deal after weeks of negotiations, during which he came close to leaving Gigg Lane for good after a disagreement over contract terms.

Rochdale, Wrexham, Chester and Stockport all offered improved terms for the midfielder, who initially wanted a one-year deal, with the option of a further season from the Shakers.

But Flitcroft has settled on a one year extension after consulting with his family during a recent holiday, and is keen to return to the kind of form which has made him a terrace favourite.

"There is something right about Bury. I get on with the players, the staff and the fans, and I feel at home here," he said.

"Whenever there is a delay in signing a contract, fans naturally assume it must be about money. But I can honestly say I am not earning a penny more.

"I was in the same position as I was at Rochdale five years ago. Back then, I made a massive mistake by moving on, and I don't want to make it again.

"Something about all the clubs I talked to did not feel right.

"I'm 32 now, and I don't need to be starting all over again if something goes wrong.

"I have a young family and I want my two young boys, Billy and Bobby, to watch me from the terraces on a Saturday.

"If I have to earn another year at the end of this contract, then so be it."

Flitcroft has made over 100 appearances for the Shakers after being released by Macclesfield Town in February 2004. His performances last season saw him sweep the board at the club's end of season awards night.

Only defender Dave Challinor had more minutes on the pitch.
