HOLCOMBE Brook pulled off a shock away win against hot favourites Wrexham in their latest Aegon Team tennis round robin match on Sunday.

The success puts them back on couse for qualification for the Bournemouth finals in July.

In the singles matches, the victories of the number one and two players, Simon Roberts and Rob Morgan, were cancelled out by losses by the three and four players, Chris Parkes and Andrew Davies. With the match delicately poised at 2-2, Brook captain Davies pulled off a masterstroke by changing his doubles partnerships against the previously unbeaten Welsh side.

Normally the Walmersley man teams up with Bolton’s Simon Roberts to form a formidable number one doubles pairings.

But Morgan and Parkes have lacked sparkle this year, only notching up one win.

Both matches were tight and went to a third set tie-break shoot-out, with number one pairing Roberts and Morgan securing a 10-2 win.

And when a Davies volley saw the second pairing home 10-6 the gamble had paid off in spectacular style.

There was further delight for Davies when he learnt that Manchester Northern had surprisingly lost to Nuffield.

With only an away match against bottom club Bamford to come, and with Wrexham and Northern meeting in their final fixture, the Brook are now favourites to qualify.
