IT has been another eventful week at UniBond Division One North side Radcliffe Borough, with the loss of defender Stephen Hill being tempered by the arrival of midfielder Andy Waine.

Hill has moved to Conference North side Leigh RMI, while former Burnley and Accrington schemer Waine has impressed enough in pre-season to be awarded a place in the Boro squad.

However, coach Kevin Glendon is not content just yet and is still searching for striking firepower ahead of the season's kick-off at Wakefield on August 18.

"I am still looking around for strikers but they are just too expensive," said Glendon. "We need a goalscorer to make sure we are competitive.

"Because they are looking so expensive I might have to think about trimming the squad so we can afford to get one in.

"I wanted to go into the season with 17 or 18 players but we might have to think about sacrificing numbers to get a striker in and have just 14 players on the books.

"It would be justified if the striker came in and scored us the goals that would help us to compete at the top of the table. There is no point in having lots of players, but none who can score regularly."

Hill's departure means Boro are also looking to bolster their defensive options, especially considering players have been playing out of position to cover the gaps in pre-season.

"Steve Howson and Martyn Forrest have been dropping back into defence and helping us out, but they are not recognised centre-halfs," said Glendon.

"They are both doing good jobs, and if I can't find a defender then Forrest might have to stay there but I did want to try Forrest in a midfield holding role.

"That would allow us to throw Gary Sampson and Lee Connell forward from midfield because they both have goals in them if they are given attacking roles."

Meanwhile, Boro are hoping to re-arrange the postponed friendly with a Bolton Wanderers first-team to another date in August. The original fixture in July had to be cancelled because of the Whites' commitments in the Peace Cup, South Korea.
