Boro’s undefeated start to the season continued with a well-deserved cup win on Saturday afternoon.

They made two changes to the side which won at Rossendale the previous Tuesday as Owen Roberts replaced Bee Amee at left back and Phil Priestley started in goal in place of Joe Brobbin.

Radcliffe got off to a good start and took the lead in the 19th minute through Steve Howson, who managed to net his first goal of the season. The chance was created when a deflected effort from Tom Brookes fell to the Boro striker who managed to beat the keeper from 10 yards.

The remainder of the half was bossed by the Radcliffe side who capitalised on Atherton’s lack of organisation which was possibly due to their recent change of manager. Boro can count themselves unlucky not to have racked up several more goals such was the volume of chances they created before the interval.

The best them to Howson, who this time failed to convert from the edge of the box when it looked easier to scor.

As has been the case in most games this season Eddie Stanford was again behind much of Radcliffe’s best work and proved a constant threat down the right wing.

He was unlucky to see his deft chip cleared off the line five minutes before the half time whistle.

The second half saw much of the Radcliffe's early momentum slip away as opposition teams have generally been able to disprupt their tempo and negate their attacking style.

The last half hour petered out into a tight and testy affair where neither team looked likely to create the kind of chance that would have threatened put the result in doubt.
