RADCLIFFE Borough manager Benny Phillips is hoping his side will learn from the mistakes that saw them twice throw away winning positions this week.

Ben Wharton’s brace put the Stainton Park side 2-0 up against Clitheroe on Saturday, but the visitors fought back and late goals from Tom Wilkins, who struck twice, and Danny Docherty denied Boro.

It was a similar story on Tuesday night against AFC Fylde as Mick Stringfellow’s 90th-minute leveller cancelled out Alistair Brown’s first-half strike.

And Phillips is hoping his side can bounce back when they visit Bamber Bridge on Saturday before hosting Ossett Albion on Tuesday.

“We have been in two winning positions and not seen it out,” he said. “We could have had six points but we came away with just one – probably through a lack of experience and the tiredness that comes with having a small squad.

“We did not defend too well against Clitheroe but we have to be quite happy with a point against Fylde because they could easily have won it at the end.

“Fylde are right up there in the table but we had the better of them in the first half until they turned the screw later in the game. We just have to take the positives and move on.”

One positive was seeing Wharton net a brace, and Phillips is hoping there is more to come from his hitman.

“It was good to see Ben on the scoresheet,” said Phillips. “The lad is returning from injury and is not fully fit yet but we have no other option other than to let him get his fitness back through playing.

“We have got Bamber on Saturday and they are in really good form so anything we can pick up will be a bonus. Ossett, who we play on Tuesday, are around us in the table and there is added importance to that game.

“We have to pick up points now to make sure we stay in this division next season.”

Mark Jones picked up a nasty knock against Fylde but Phillips is hopeful he will recover in time for the Bamber Bridge game.
