Bury players have been put through their paces on their return to pre-season training at a hot and sweltering Gigg Lane.

Boss Anthony Johnson, assistant Tim Lees, and the rest of the coaching staff were happy with what they saw as players returned fit and raring to go as they prepare for life in NPL West.

Squad members were given time off to celebrate winning the NWCL Premier League title—the club’s second successive league title—but each player was sent off with a summer training programme to follow.

"They were given an off-season programme where essentially they’re doing three runs a week, a couple of workouts each week so they’ve come in in really good shape," Johnson told the club website.

"And it’s a real fine balance, you don’t peak too soon, you don’t come in and the lads are knackered and you’re picking injuries up early, so it’s a really fine balance.

"Football’s changed a lot since I started managing back in 2009, from players looking after themselves, nutrition, gym, all that type of thing from a physical point of view.

"So they’ve come in really good shape."
