The mobile phone service provider behind plans to fit a 5G mast on a cul-de-sac in Greenmount has defended its proposals after complaints from residents.

Three has lodged an application to instal a 16m mast on Coleridge Road, which lies in the middle of a residential estate, with the blueprints angering neighbours.

If approved, the mast would be close to double the size of houses in the area.

The plans have garnered 102 objections on the council's planning portal.

But the applicant has said the spot that has been chosen is important in boosting people's technology usage.

A Three spokesperson said: “We want to offer the community in Greenmount a reliable network experience and this site will be critical to making that happen.

"While we try to keep mast sites as unobtrusive as possible, they need to be situated where people will be using the service and, in many cases, in precise locations to ensure the widest breadth of coverage.”

Greenmount residents have called for the council and Three to reconsider the placement of the mast and look for alternative areas.

Concerns residents pointed out was the loss of a children’s play area and green space, wildlife like bats and hedgehogs could be affected, if the mast may produce radiation and if this could result in "farming", which is where companies could suddenly put more masts up in the area.

The council said a decision of whether the mast installation will go ahead is set to be made on October 17.
