Residents are being invited to have their say on the location of a new pedestrian crossing on a road in Elton to make it safer.

Councillors Charlotte Morris and Martin Hayes have secured funding for a new crossing on Tottington Road in this year’s council budget when the council committed £500,000 to road safety improvements across the borough.

The announcement came following a road safety campaign that Cllrs Morris and Hayes have been running for around 12 months.

The campaign has included petitioning residents, meeting with people raising questions on road safety in council meetings, lobbying for additional funding and working with the local policing team on greater enforcement.

Work has been underway to identify the most suitable location and type of crossing and council officers have determined that there are two suitable locations- at the top of Tottington Road near the Tesco Express or at the bottom of Tottington Road near Elton Primary School.

Councillors are seeking residents’ views on the preferred option before feeding back to the council.

Cllr Morris said: “We know that road safety is a major concern for residents in Elton.

“That’s why we launched a campaign last year to secure funding from the council for a series of measures to make our roads safer for all users, including a plea for a new pedestrian crossing on Tottington Road.

“We’re delighted that funding has now been allocated for a crossing on Tottington Road.

"In reality, we know that one crossing is not enough and, ideally, we would like to see both installed, however, this is not possible right now as the council’s financial situation is extremely challenging – with over £29m of cuts required next year alone as a result of soaring inflation and the cost of living crisis, and of course following over a decade of austerity.

“We will continue to make the case for further funding so that we can eventually secure both crossings, which we believe are needed to make getting across Tottington Road easier and safer.

“But for now, we have the opportunity to install a crossing at one of the preferred locations on Tottington Road and it’s over to residents to tell us what they want.”

The survey, which will run until Sunday, December 18, can be accessed online at https://bit.ly/tottyroadcrossing or alternatively you can contact Charlotte or Martin to share your views.
