England World Cup star Kieran Trippier has spoken of his pride of being part of the squad after the country's exit from the tournament at the weekend.

The footballer from Summerseat posted on Instagram highlighting the squad's disappointment being knocked out after a 2-1 quarter final defeat to France in Qatar on Saturday night.

The 32-year-old started England’s first two matches against Iran - an emphatic 6-2 win - and USA - a 0-0 draw - and came off the bench in the 3-0 victory over Wales in the third group game, replacing Luke Shaw.

The Newcastle defender did not feature in England's 3-0 win against Senegal in the second round tie or in loss at the hands of France.

On Sunday, Tripper, who now has 40 international caps to his name, said: “So disappointing to go out at the quarter final stage of the World Cup.

“I really feel last night (Saturday) we gave everything we could, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“I’m so proud to be a part of this group of players, the bond we all have is so close and I have no doubt this group will be back again.

“A huge thank you to all the fans for your support, it really does mean the world to us.”

Throughout England’s journey in the competition, Trippier and the team have received lots of support, especially from his hometown.

Pupils from Holcombe Brook Primary School, where he attended as a youngster, were filmed cheering him on during opening game against Iran.

The students were filmed watching the game chanting "Let’s go Trippier!"

The school Tweeted: “Our children loved cheering on former pupil Kieran Trippier- every corner and free kick he took, every great tackle he made! Well done, Kieran! Come on England!”

The former Athletico Madrid star shared the post on Twitter and said: “Thanks for the support everyone.”

Trippier, who also played for England in the World Cup in Russia four years ago, is set to receive the freedom of the borough award for his contribution to the sport after the honour was previously agreed by the council.
