Prestwich Carnival will be going ahead this year after securing sponsors following an appeal.

Jennie Platt Estates and Lettings, based on Bury New Road, has agreed to sponsor the carnival’s grand parade, which will be held on Sunday, June 25.

The carnival, which will be taking place at St Mary's Park on June 24 and 25, has been appealing for businesses to sponsor them this year as the event's future was cast in doubt.

The rising costs, lack of volunteers and reduced sponsorship put the 101-year-old event into significant financial pressure and was close to not going ahead.

After reading that the carnival needed to attract more sponsors, Jennie got in touch with carnival chair Peter Roberts to offer her support.

Jennie said: "Prestwich Carnival is a big part of the Prestwich year and I'm only too glad to sponsor the grand parade.

“As a Prestwich business, I feel it's important to do my bit and keep the carnival going.

"The parade passes my premises on Bury New Road every year and to contemplate the carnival not going ahead is unthinkable."

The fresh sponsor announcement comes after a pledge from regular carnival main stage sponsor Anatolian Grill, a Turkish restaurant in Prestwich.

And Muse Living has agreed to sponsor the carnival's children’s football competition.

But the organisers of the carnival are appealing for more sponsorship and help to ensure the popular annual event can continue for years to come.

The event celebrated its 100th birthday last year after a two-year absence in the village due to the pandemic.

Carnival chair Peter Roberts said: “The carnival is 101 years old, but all of our costs, such as insurance, toilet hire, security and first aid, have increased significantly and we’ve also had sponsors drop out adding to the financial pressure.

“As well as this, we can’t put the Grand Parade on without a required number of traffic marshals.

"We also need people to help on the day, with, for example, car parking and litter picking.

“We’re asking for volunteers to come forward to help over the weekend of June 24 and 25.

“And we’re also appealing for further sponsors to come forward.”

There will be a funfair, variety of stalls, kids donkey rides, live music and a charity dog show at the event.
