A Tottington midwife has inspired Britain's first Eurovision winner to rerelease her song 56 years later to raise funds for Ukraine.

Sandie Shaw, who won the contest in 1967 with hit single "Puppet on a String", appeared on BBC's The One Show and said that heard Wendy Warrington on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour talking about her aid work in Ukraine.

Sandie said: “I wanted to support Ukraine in any way I could.

“I heard that there was a midwife that had come back from Ukraine, and she said that all the women there were giving birth in a war zone.

“They had no clinical help, and they were nursing babies and bringing up children and there was no money to do that.

“I said, ‘what can I do’ and I thought I’ll re-release Puppet on a String and all the money will go to Ukraine.”

Wendy, a NHS registered nurse, is still continuing her work in Ukraine and Poland supporting refugees and sending over vital equipment for hospitals and shelters.

In the past year, she has been travelling back and forth from Ukraine and Poland delivering vital medical equipment in high-risk areas including Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine.

Her achievements have been recognised nationally and she won the Best Midwife award at The Sun’s Who Cares Wins Awards late last year.

She stood for to be a councillor in the local elections earlier this month but did not win enough votes to be elected.
