There are hopes for Bury North MP James Daly's three-year-old labrador retriever Bertie will be named Westminster Dog of the Year 2023.

Organised jointly by Dogs Trust and The Kennel Club, the event will be taking place on Thursday, September 14 at Victoria Tower Gardens in London.

The event has been running since 1992 and is open to dog-loving MPs and their four-legged friends of all ages, breeds, shapes and sizes, pedigree and crossbreed alike.

Mr Daly hopes that he can celebrate his canine to highlight the important role dogs play in society.

This year the event focuses on responsible dog ownership, and how, through training, socialisation, and responsible owner behaviour, we can help dogs to lead happy and healthy lives.

The pair are hoping for public support in the Sir David Amess Pawblic Vote, in which the MPs and their canine companions are seeking votes from their local constituents.

The award is named in memory of the late Conservative MP who was a staunch advocate for the competition and had campaigned tirelessly to improve and protect dog welfare throughout his life.

Mr Daly said: “Bertie is my biggest supporter and also the perfect active play companion to my two boys.

“The energy that fills my house when I return home from Parliament each day rejuvenates me and puts a smile on my face.

“He deserves to win the title of Westminster Dog of the Year, not only because he is the goodest of boys, but also because his energy and unique character can charm anyone around him.”
