Teenage motorbike rider seriously hurt in crash near Bury's Gigg Lane

A man has been charged with drink driving and other offences after a crash in'Bury left a teenage motorbike rider in a 'serious condition'.

The incident involving two cars and a motorbike happened on Manchester Road on Saturday afternoon (August 9).

Emergency service crews were in attendance, and the road was closed off for some time with diversions in place.  

Gary Wooff, 57, of Larch Avenue, Radcliffe was later charged with drink driving, driving with no insurance and driving with no licence.

A witness said: "There was a terrible crash on Manchester Road, just after the Bury FC game ended.

"It looked like two cars, a delivery motorbike and a bus were involved. Members of the public were helping divert traffic off the main road and towards Fishpool."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: “We were called to an incident on Manchester Road at 5.15pm on Saturday, August 9, involving one motorbike and two cars.

“The motorbike rider was injured and taken to hospital and a man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.”

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Services (NWAS) confirmed that crews were called to Manchester Road at 5.15pm on Saturday to reports of a multi-vehicle collision.

Two ambulances were at the scene and paramedics took a male in his late teens to hospital in a “serious condition”. 

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At shortly before 5.40pm on Saturday, August 9, one fire engine from Bury fire station attended a crash involving two cars and a motorcycle on Radcliffe Road, Bury.

“Firefighters worked alongside partners to make the vehicles and surrounding area safe and were in attendance for around 30 minutes.”
