Work to turn a former gaming arcade in Bury into a “upmarket bar” is set to begin subject to approval.

Paul Clark, who has had a licence granted to serve alcohol at a site on Wash Lane, has submitted a change of use planning application to the council to start work on converting the premises into a “wine/cocktail bar” seating around 35 people.

The new bar, set to be named Ravens Bar, will replace Games Hub on 2A Wash Lane at the end of a row of terraced properties on the street.

The application could also see 2B Wash Lane, a former residential flat on the first floor, be converted into office space, stock and CCTV monitoring.

In a supporting statement written to the council, Mr Clark said he had received positive reaction from residents about the new opening which promises to offer a "personal and homely" atmosphere.

He said: "The plan for the bar has been a very long process and not something I've just decided I want to do overnight.

"My wife and I own a beauty salon on Bell Lane, and we have told people about the bar and there is a real welcoming for something more personal and homely than a standard pub in the local area.

"The size of our bar will accommodate 35/45 people maximum and its more of an upmarket wine/cocktail bar.

"Music being played inside of the premises will always be to a level as to not disturb neighbours because we want to have a successful business in and around the local community."

Work on the premises will include changing the existing signage but won’t include any permanent building work on the exterior.

A licence for Ravens Bar was approved by the council earlier this month giving the owner permission to serve alcohol and play recorded music for customers from 11pm.

The licence allows the venue to stay open until 1.30am from Monday to Thursday and Sundays, and up to 3.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The application was given the go-ahead after the licence holder agreed to minor amendments to his original application, including agreeing to hire additional door staff and to ensure fire extinguishers and smoke alarms were regularly serviced.

No date has been set for the application to be discussed by the council’s planning committee.
