Bury FC’s boss has spoken out about a “gesture of solidarity and footballing friendship” thought up by the club offering support to fans facing a hard time.

The Shakers invited Morecambe supporters to join them at the Gigg Lane football ground, on Saturday, August 9.

Fans were able to watch Bury’s Northern Premier League West home opener against Newcastle Town for free, in which Bury FC came out on top courtesy of a 97th-minute goal from defender Aiden Walker.

The kind gesture came after news that Morecambe FC has been suspended from the National League with immediate effect, due to financial issues.

The team will not play in the division during the first weeks of the new season and a review will be held on August 20.

Speaking after the match on Saturday, Bury FC boss Dave McNabb said: “Massive credit to our football club for reaching out and coming up with that idea.

"I don’t know who it was specifically but it was a brilliant, brilliant gesture.

“Hopefully that group of fans who have come here have managed to switch off from their troubles and enjoy another game - but it’s terrible to see what is going on.”

A spokesperson for the club said the team has “watched with great sympathy and understanding” after being expelled by the English Football League when a takeover bid collapsed in 2019.

Bury FC returned to Gigg Lane after two separate supporter-led groups agreed to merge in 2023.

McNabb added: “I don’t know what needs to be done but there has got to be some better element of financial control in the game so we can’t be letting institutions and communities lose their football clubs.

“It is just too, too important for everyone around, as we know full well. So whatever the next steps are for Morecambe, I wish them all the best.

"Obviously, the fans were brilliant, I hope they enjoyed it and I hope they got to switch off just for one day and try and forget a little bit of the troubles.”
